Simon argues with Jace and leaves the Institute. The Shadowhunters use a necklace to lure warlock Magnus out of hiding to seek his help in retrieving Clary's memories. Magnus informs them that he fed the memories to a memory demon for safekeeping. Back at Magnus’ loft they summon the demon. They are each asked to relinquish a beloved memory but Alec's insecurities about his feelings for Jace disrupt the ritual, forcing Clary to kill the demon before recovering any memories. Simon has visions of Camille and returns to the Hotel Dumort.
